Meeting of St. Leo the Great with Attila (1653) by Alessandro Algardi. November 10th is St. Leo the Great’s Feast Day, and what better way to celebrate than with this magnificent marble relief? The work depicts St. Leo the Great (left) confronting King Attila the Hun, persuading him to turn back from his invasion of Rome. Above them, Sts. Peter and Paul appear, lending divine authority to Leo’s plea. Against all odds, St. Leo succeeded; sparing Rome from destruction and earning his place as one of the Church’s most courageous popes. We don’t often feature sculpture, but this masterpiece more than earns an exception. You can find it in St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City — a true testament to faith, diplomacy, and Baroque artistry.
